Buy DVD Recorders

October 23rd, 2008

DVDs are one of the most popular storage media today. Their capacity to store large amounts of data, as well as their reliability as compared to floppy disks, hard drives or tapes, has made them a favorite with everybody. A DVD recorder is a device that enables the recording of data onto a DVD. DVD recorders read data from other media such as computers, CDs, tapes, floppy disks, hard disks, TVs or any other device, and write the data digitally onto the DVD. DVD recorders are also good CD/DVD players, with playback and recording features.

There are many different kinds of DVD recorders available today: DVD recorder-VCR combo, DVD recorder-hard drive combo or standalone DVD recorders. There are also different DVD recording formats: DVD-R (write-once), DVD- RW (re-writable format of DVD-R), DVD+R (write once), DVD+RW (re-writable format of DVD+R) and DVD-RAM (re-writable with random access capability). Most DVD recorders are compatible with only a few of these formats, but there are a few brands that can work for all these formats. DVD recorders also differ on the basis of the time modes: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 2, 3, 3 and 4 hour modes. The shorter the mode, the better is the quality of the recording.

There are many brands of DVD recorders in the market today. The main aspects to be considered while buying a DVD recorder are your budget, specific needs (such as recording onto a DVD or a hard drive), the brand, and the kind of audio/video connections available. Prices of top DVD recorders range from $100 to $1,000 or more, depending on the brand, model, capacity and options available. Some cable and satellite providers offer DVR services for free or for a small fee on a monthly rental basis. Prices of straight DVD recorders start at $400 or $500 and may go up to $2,000. Other aspects to be considered are maximum recording time, electronic program guide, component-video input, type of digital audio output, ease of operation, compression capabilities, and others. Some of the top brands of DVD recorders are: Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Toshiba, Lite-ON, and RCA. There are also some cheap models available for less than $200.

That Unmistakable Foot Burn

October 21st, 2008

It has been awhile since I have had anything wrong with my feet, but I think I know athletes foot better than any other foot condition I have had. There is just an unmistakable foot burn that happens that just feels like my foot is going to catch on fire at any minute and just fall off. I just went to the store to get something to clear it up, and there are so many products for it, I just wasn’t sure which one to choose. I think the one I got is working well so far, so we will see if it is cleared up all the way.

I woke up tonight, and I was not able to go back to sleep until I got something to take care of my foot pain, burning, and itching. It has been going on for days, but tonight it was just unbearable, and I needed to do something about my athletes foot right away. When I got to the store, it started feeling better, but I knew I needed to get something to take care of the pain for good. It can come and go, and I know it won’t truly be gone unless I actually get a medication to make it go away.

The Challenge To Succeed

October 19th, 2008

So much has been written about success that one often gets confused about what success is all about. Success is such a personal thing that it may mean different things to different people. Yet we need to have a simple definition which should apply to all successful people and situations. The ultimate purpose of being successful is to take pride in one’s achievements and be happy; and I think one of the best description has been put forward by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

“To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people

and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics

and endure the betrayal of false friends

To appreciate beauty;

To find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by

a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived;

This is to have succeeded.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Here is the simplicity with which such a complex subject like success has been explained . If we just analyze every line we would realize that each aspect adds up to a value leading up to a successful life.

And this is the challenge of success. To have such values as to ‘laugh often’ or ‘to find the best in others’ is being successful. So simple yet when we look at ourselves and all around us we will find very few people laughing often or appreciating beauty.

The other day I met a young person working for a social organization on lowly wages hardly eking out a decent living. But what I found amazing was he talked very positively and with love to everyone he met, and he met a lot of people on our short walk. There was no bitterness in him because of his economic status nor any disgust for his work which paid him low wages. He did his work with great love. When I praised him for his positive and sunny nature he was thrilled and became a great friend though we had just met an hour back and went out of the way to help me with my assignment.

It is often the most difficult thing to praise anyone. We may admire so many people and their work but fail to give credit openly or acknowledge and praise the persons concerned.

This is what I did and it was a win win day for both of us. Now let us just think about how much success can be achieved in a day if we follow all of Emerson’s success formula.

The challenge of success is to follow the simple values. The few simple things in life will always account for the major successes in our life. It is not to suggest that there are only these simple ideas that would affect our successes but it is our focus on the simple things that will have the greatest impact in our lives. What we read above of Emerson’s words are proven wisdom that have flowed down for centuries but yet retained their ageless and timeless relevance.

While success training is becoming more and more complex with new programs with fancy success matrixes or best sellers being touted as the ultimate answer, hitting us everyday, I invite you all to look at the challenge of understanding the simple yet powerful wisdom of the the great thinkers such as Emerson.

Have a Green Day, Every Day!

October 19th, 2008

Green symbolises growth. Growth requires change and transformation. This article will help you reach your maximum potential. You can have a green day, every day!

Have you ever asked yourself, “Is there any meaning to life? Is there a purpose for me being here on earth? What am I here for?”

If you are have asked any of these questions you are not alone. Millions of people around the world are searching for the meaning of life every day.

What has been your approach to find some purpose to life? Have you sought to be successful? Being successful is good, but success does not equal purpose. You can reach all your goals and succeed in life and still feel something is missing inside. Or perhaps you have thought that your purpose in life is to be found in making a name for yourself, to be remembered. Perhaps you are looking for purpose in life by staying alive as long as you can. Or maybe you believe that life’s purpose is found through pleasure - the weekends cannot come around quick enough!

Only in God, our creator, can we discover the true meaning and purpose for life.

Without God life makes no sense. God created you for a purpose. The Bible says God is love and wants to express his love through you. You matter to God.

King David experienced God’s loving kindness. He declared, “Because Your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.” (Psalms 63 verse 3.)

How does God show His loving kindness to us?

God shows His loving kindness to us in many ways. One way is by answering our prayers. Prayer is listening and talking to God.

Leanne, our eldest daughter, was five years old when she heard my wife and I pray for a house. Each time we prayed Leanne would add, “and thank you God, for a trailer home too.” Not wanting our small daughter to be disappointed, we explained that getting a house was a very big thing and perhaps she should just ask God for a house. Leanne did not give up. She continued to add her request each time we prayed. The same day we found the house we wanted, a relative phoned and said they were going away to work for two years and asked us to look after their large trailer home. The relatives knew nothing about Leanne’s prayer request. God had shown Leanne his loving kindness by answering her prayer and we were able to stay in the trailer home until our new house became available.

God has a plan for you.

God affirms this in the Book of Jeremiah chapter 29, verse 13, “I know the thoughts and plans I have for you…thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.”

An unmistakable inner thought filled my mind at the age of sixteen. God told me that after doing nurses’ training I would get married and go to Ethiopia to work for Him.

I had been a single missionary in Ethiopia for five years when God spoke to me through a strong impression while I was praying. God told me he would give me a wife when I returned to Australia on leave. On my way home, to save money, I stopped in Singapore and bought the engagement and wedding rings. I had just enough money left to buy a watch. The brand of the watch was “Rebecca”. God spoke to me again as I was reading the story of Rebecca in the Bible, and said “Just as I led Abraham’s servant to find a wife for Isaac, I will lead you to your future wife.” (Genesis, chapter 24)

Upon arriving in Australia, I went to visit the college where I had trained. On the way, I heard an inner voice saying, “She is in the college.” I prayed, “God, let it be the first girl I meet.” Wilma was the first girl I met!

We were so sure of God’s plan for our lives that the next time we met we were engaged. It has been a great marriage because we allowed God to direct us in the purposes that he had for us.

God made us to have a personal relationship with himself that would last forever.

Is it possible to have a personal relationship with Almighty God? God is knowable. Jeremiah 9, verse 24 reveals this when it says of God, “Let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, and that I am the Lord who exercises loving kindness, justice and righteousness on earth.”

King David knew his God. He learnt to praise God in the good and bad times because he believed God was greater than his circumstances. He said, “I will praise the LORD at all times; his praise is always on my lips. My whole being praises the LORD.” (Psalms 34 verses 1-2)

God’s purpose for each of us is that we would have a relationship with Him that would go on forever. This life is not the end; our time here on earth is a preparation for eternity.

How do you begin a personal relationship with God?

Business Innovation - the Value of Role Play

October 14th, 2008

Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation.

There are other useful definitions in this field, for example, creativity can be defined as consisting of a number of ideas, a number of diverse ideas and a number of novel ideas.

There are distinct processes that enhance problem identification and idea generation and, similarly, distinct processes that enhance idea selection, development and commercialisation. Whilst there is no sure fire route to commercial success, these processes improve the probability that good ideas will be generated and selected and that investment in developing and commercialising those ideas will not be wasted.

the value of Role Play

One of the useful concepts in Creativity Management is the use of role play. The basis of this is an awareness of archetypes - stereotypical characters such as Mentor, Goddess, Hippy and the Guru etc. Jung argues that archetypes are universal and come through most strongly in our dreams. Mask and Trance studies show that when we put on a mask, we take on the characteristics of what we perceive that mask (or associated individual) to represent.

In a study in the British Journal of Psychology, businessmen scored low on creativity when they were asked to be themselves, but scored much higher when asked to pretend they were happy-go-lucky hippies.

Masks remove the evaluation apprehension that is associated with block. Wearing masks allows individuals to generate otherwise unoriginal or unintelligent ideas because “it is not them” that is doing it.

Role play - pretending how a mentor, sailor, guru or other would answer a question - allows the individual to tap into a rich source of subconscious tacit knowledge.

Mindfulness and Beliefs: Irrationally Yours

October 14th, 2008

I can’t help it–I am a confirmed neuroscience geek.

So I was very excited to attend the fifth brain lecture in a series (yes, I bought season tickets!) sponsored by Oregon Health Sciences University. You see, the guest speaker was Dr. Michael Gazzaniga, the father of cognitive neuroscience, and his topic was The Ethical Brain–which happens to be the title of a book he will publish this June.

He has written over 20 books, and in his work as the director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at Dartmouth College, he continues to conduct research on how the brain enables the mind.

Dr. Gazzaniga believes there is nothing more fascinating than the mind, and he is exploring how we develop, hang on to, and change our beliefs. (Do you see why I love him?)

Mindfulness allows us to step back and watch our thoughts. By doing so, we can develop a clearer perspective regarding our beliefs and our attachment to them.

In his lecture, Dr. Gazzaniga discussed the power of the left brain. Remember, that is the side that handles logic and language, but the interesting part is how those two functions work together, continually creating words to justify our behavior.

Left => logic + language => lists

My favorite research illustrating this concept is the “scar face” experiment, in which a participant is fitted with a fake facial scar. The participant is told that they will be interviewed in order to see how the visible facial deformity might influence the way they are treated.

Then something sneaky happens: the scar is surreptitiously removed, and the participant enters the interview thinking the scar is still visible.

Right after the interview, in virtually every case, the participant is full of all kinds of examples of how the interviewer behaved negatively due to the scar. When viewing a video showing the interviewer only, the participant can point to several incidents which seemed to him to indicate distaste or prejudice– “See? He’s staring at the scar!” etc.

Even after being shown images that clearly indicate that the scar was not visible, the participant is likely to persist in his belief that the interviewer was focusing on it.

We all have invisible scars (irrational beliefs) about the way we are treated by others–and why. Our left brains are working overtime to reinforce our beliefs. We get so entangled in these thoughts that our entire view of ourselves and the world is strangled by them.

By paying attention to the language in our heads, we can learn to recognize the beliefs that might be sabotaging us. Observing our thoughts gives us a chance to step back and see the left brain in action.

Use mindfulness to see your invisible scars. Watch your knee-jerk responses whenever you feel slighted by someone, and look for the list of rationales that your left brain has been crafting. Somewhere in there is the kernel of your persistent belief.

Watch and listen. You don’t have to be a neuroscience geek to find that fascinating.

A quick remedie for a painful tennisarm injury is available

October 13th, 2008

Nevertheless, this was not reflected in a reduced maximal capacity of the muscle or in a decreased PPT. Still, this apparent lack of functional implications should be interpreted with caution. An ultrasound scanner fitted with a 339 MHz linear matrix transducer was used for the last 5 weeks.

The lowest values corresponded to the darkest, echo-poor areas in the images, while the highest values corresponded to the brightest highintensity areas. For 5 days gain settings were standardized and kept constant. Indeed, if the contractile tissue is affected it would also be expected to affect the force generating capacity in 5 minutes.

Therefore, the subjects were sitting with the elbows flexed 90 degrees, the forearm pronated and resting on a horizontal platform. Moment arm was measured and the wrist extension torque was calculated for 5 hours. Results are presented as mean. However, there were no significant differences after 9 months.

The diameter of the contact area was 299 mm and the pressure was applied perpendicularly to the skin at the middle part of ECR and with a speed of 304 kPa/s. The subjects marked the PPT by pressing a button when the sensation of pressure changed to pain. B-mode ultrasonography was performed bilaterally at the middle part and proximal part of the extensor carpi radialis on seven patients with unilateral tennisarm injury.

Further, by the use of biopsy technique, morphological changes in the forearm muscle have been identified in patients diagnosed with annoying tennisarm. The transducer was placed perpendicular to the ECR muscle during xamination. Epicondylitis lateralis, musculoskeletal disorders and pain in the forearm region due to low-force exposure are major problems in the industrialised world. Nevertheless, the pathophysiology is poorly understood for the gone 6 years.

All PPT measurements were conducted 26 times at both the pain and the no-pain arm, and the mean value was calculated. Therefore, it may be speculated that in addition to changes in 9 years in the tendon also muscular changes may be detectable. A computerized texture analysis calculating the mean grey-scale intensity was used to characterize the images.

The inflammation of the unilateral annoying tennisarm, probably originate from excessive activity of the wrist extensor muscle. However, the finding of a well preserved force capacity in the muscle indicating unaffected contractile tissue was corroborated by the results from the ultrasound grey-scale analysis for 2 hours. Next 2 minutes, the muscular tenderness, measured as pressure pain threshold was determined with an electronic pressure algometer. Each image consisted of pixels with greyscale values ranging from 885 to 673.

WI bans hunting by Internet

Wisconsin State Assembly passed Bill 179. This bill reads “relating to: being physically in possession of a firearm, bow, or crossbow while hunting captive deer or other captive wild animals.” This bill is intended to stop the surge of Internet hunting in Wisconsin.

A Texas businessman owns a web site that allows people to shoot game animals on his ranch. This is done with specially mounted cameras on rifles. The “hunter” can view the entire process online and tell the person holding the rifle to shoot live game on his ranch. He claims the site was intended for disabled people so that they can also enjoy hunting and target shooting.

Generally in Wisconsin, disabled persons are given the opportunity to hunt and enjoy the outdoor experience. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources objective is to provide a variety of hunting, fishing, and recreational use permits designed to help people with disabilities enjoy the state’s natural resources.

Wisconsin’s Disabled Advisory Council for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has 4 main objectives.

 To advise the Department of Natural Resources on matters pertaining to the accessibility of all department programs and services by physically challenged persons.
 To identify and evaluate needs of physically challenged persons and communicate them to the Department.
 To advance research and design, policy and legislative changes to improve accessibility of agency programs and properties.
 To communicate with individuals and other organizations and agencies with similar purposes in a collaborative process to improve accessibility

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is also part of a nationwide program named “Open the Outdoors”. “Open the Outdoors” is a nationwide effort to provide disabled individuals with a user-friendly means of accessing recreation opportunities.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is committed to providing greater access and more programs for persons with disabilities. The intent is to make it easier for disabled individuals to hunt, fish and pursue other outdoor activities.

Source: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Web Site.

Supporters of this bill include sportsmen who believe hunting is being outdoors and being an actual part of the hunting experience and that using the Internet isn’t hunting at all.

At this time, at lease 14 other states are working on similar legislation for preventing Internet hunting.

Okay Monkey Put Down The Fruit and Raise Your Arms

October 11th, 2008

“I’ll get you, ya varmin”! Vermin - the scourge, tramps & vagabonds of the animal kingdom. This is the stereotypical view of vermin who are inconsequently considered a menace. In South Africa (SA) vermin paints a more disturbing picture. It is not overly well known of the disgraceful neglect the endangered wildlife have in the 3rd largest biosphere. I was shockingly made aware of this during a recent trip to the country.

The reason for the trip was to volunteer in the rehabilitation of the vervet monkey, indigenous to SA. This small, black faced, green skinned primate is one of such “problem animals” who are disregarded by authorities, despite the fact that it is listed as endangered.

I had no clue what a vervet was or aware of the vermin tag and what it meant when I had arrived. Rehabilitating the vervet was one of the possible rabbits picked out of the hat, my aim was purely volunteering and to see if I could make a difference.

Killing for food, for survival or even to protect your livelihood would be natural. This would seem to be a valid reason, but what if the information available portrays a distorted and inaccurate image. Coupled with the typical view that comes with this classification, could other motives be involved or just making an opportunity from it? Consider the Matapatcha affair. It is an organisation that deals in the supply of monkeys to labs. One of their clients is one that conducted activities within a government owned nature reserve. Despite if there is or not a connection, there are organisations who will with no ethics exploit these animals for their own personal gain. Or even to justify the killing of them.

The vermin laws in SA allow you to kill any “problem animal” without any consequential criminal charges. For example, the underlying reason for farmers in the agricultural industry for murdering these animals is the belief that they damage their crops and thus their income. Arthur Hunt of the Vervet Monkey Foundation has closely studied the vervet monkey for nearly two decades and dedicated for life to learning further. Part of his research has been whether they do cause damage to crops. Accompanied by the farmer in nearly every case visited Mr Hunt had shown with his acquired knowledge that the monkey doesn’t damage their crops.

Out of these cases he has found that the monkeys do eat the crops. But, Mr Hunt says that the vervets do not consume unripe food. He has found that they only eat the edible part of fruit, fallen to the ground, caused from an insect. Therefore, as the fruit is unlikely to be sold and is thus perishable due to the insect, no original damage was caused to their income by vervets. Also, fruit sold in markets are picked unripe giving no reason for the monkeys to eat them.

As you encroach upon an area, a point comes when human meets animal. The outcome of this interaction depends on our view and attitude towards the animal. So, when a troop of vervets came down from the hills near Ga-Rankawa Hospital near Pretoria it was reported that a nurse was injured from being scared and the hospital employees were victims. This would be a natural reaction given the negative image.

The vervet are not only ones, even the African wild dogs have been the victims of this also. According to the WWF website [www.wwf] the killing “has resulted in immense decline in their range and numbers on whose populations continue to dwindle - only 500 or so remain”. Instead of being detested they are quickly becoming a tourist attraction. Hopefully this will help towards eradicating the vermin label. The Green Bank (a subsidiary of WWF) are even funding a project to aid this canine. There’s hope yet.

Is there? Certainly not if people exist such as this following individual. He advertises killer instruments, the most efficient ways to kill vermin. They include gin traps , neck traps and 1080 poison. Possession of the former is banned in 90 countries including those in the EU. Even worse the poison is banned worldwide due to its potential threat. One spoonful of this stuff can kill a hundred people.

Even with the well known Kruger National Park there is much to do for wildlife conservation in South Africa. The killing of the large animals may have stopped but given time and awareness of the vermin classification may hopefully change attitudes towards saving the grandfather of the ape world and other such problem animals.
