Meditation and Memory

November 18th, 2008

Meditation is a wonderful method of helping the entire body to relax. Through a system of breathing exercises the body naturally feels the stress being released and for many people it allows them to be much more open and receptive.

Meditation can also aid in helping with memory. When a person feels relaxed the memory seems to function much better. Through the use of breathing and concentration the memory feels alive and vibrant once again.

Remember the last time you forgot someone’s name or their birthday? It was probably during a period where you had a great deal on your mind or you were feeling stress.

Upon realizing your forgetfulness this generally stirs up even more anxiety which again leads to more memory problems. It’s a cycle that some people find themselves constantly in.

By employing some of the techniques of meditation that people have been using for years, you can help open up your mind and memory thus allowing it to function better.

It’s wonderful to imagine having the ability to recall names, numbers and important dates without having to look for pieces of paper or check a calendar. Instead it would all be there within your memory.

Meditation does not need to be a complicated process. There are simple exercises that anyone can do for a few moments each day that will help boost the memory.

The key to using meditation as a memory booster is that it will help build concentration which works hand in hand with developing memory.

Finding a quiet spot is very helpful when you want to meditate. Some people also feel that having essential oils or candles burning adds to the necessary ambiance.

If that does help you relax than it’s going to beneficial to the entire process including helping you to reenergize your mind. There are also certain scents of oils and candles that are said to be beneficial for memory function.

Meditation can be taught in a class and there are usually classes offered at natural health care facilities and often even at regular gyms.

Some of the classes are geared towards helping the memory to function. For a person who feels as though their mind isn’t as sharp as it once was, taking one of these classes will benefit them for years to come.

Building up a regular routine of meditation to aid in boosting the memory will also build self-esteem. Feeling as though you are on top of your game mentally is a wonderful self-image booster.

For someone who feels less comfortable within a class of people learning meditation, there are many books and manuals that offer substantial information on mediation as a method of empowering the memory.

Some offer illustrations of body position and along with descriptions for the breathing exercises. Following the methods outlined daily will open the person up to the benefits of meditation.

By using the techniques described they will not only be relaxing their bodies but fueling their memory as well. Having a relaxed and clear mind is one of the most important aspects to having a strong memory.

Meditation - Transcend Your Limitations

November 16th, 2008

Many believe that the mind is divided into three parts: the conscious, the sub-conscious, and the super conscious. Our conscious mind is usually cluttered with distractions and noise, our sub-conscious holds suppressed past experiences, fears, and (imagined) limitations, but the super conscious is where our perfection and mastery reside.

Think back to a time in your life where everything “clicked”, and you could do no wrong. It may have been for only a few minutes, but for that brief time you were invincible. Maybe you were shooting hoops, and you just couldn’t miss. You felt so “on”, you knew that every shot would be a “swish”… and it was. Possibly you were playing tennis, and you felt as though you could return every shot… and you did. Perhaps you were painting, and you felt like no stroke from your brush could be wrong… and the canvas turned out to be beautiful. Whether you were dancing, playing a musical instrument, programming a computer, or public speaking, I imagine that at some time in your life, you have experienced such a transcendence of your regular limitations. This state is known as “superconsciousness”. If you have been to this space before, you would do anything to get there again. Unfortunately, therein lays the problem. When we try to analyze and pressure ourselves to reclaim “superconsciousness”, we almost certainly fail.

One way of attaining super consciousness is through meditation. Meditation is the path to true self-awareness. Through meditation we can escape from the limitations that our conscious and sub-conscious mind subject us to.

Come back to the SoundSleeping discussion page in the next few days when I will describe how you can use meditation to rise above your limitations.

Meditation 101

November 14th, 2008

Meditation refers to a state where your body and mind are consciously relaxed and focused. Practitioners of this art report increased awareness, focus, and concentration, as well as a more positive outlook in life.

Meditation is most commonly associated with monks, mystics and other spiritual disciplines. However, you don’t have to be a monk or mystic to enjoy its benefits. And you don’t even have to be in a special place to practice it. You could even try it in your own living room!

Although there are many different approaches to meditation, the fundamental principles remain the same. The most important among these principles is that of removing obstructive, negative, and wandering thoughts and fantasies, and calming the mind with a deep sense of focus. This clears the mind of debris and prepares it for a higher quality of activity.

The negative thoughts you have those of noisy neighbors, bossy officemates, that parking ticket you got, and unwanted spam are said to contribute to the ‘polluting’ of the mind, and shutting them out is allows for the ‘cleansing’ of the mind so that it may focus on deeper, more meaningful thoughts.

Some practitioners even shut out all sensory input no sights, no sounds, and nothing to touch and try to detach themselves from the commotion around them. You may now focus on a deep, profound thought if this is your goal. It may seem deafening at first, since we are all too accustomed to constantly hearing and seeing things, but as you continue this exercise you will find yourself becoming more aware of everything around you.

If you find the meditating positions you see on television threatening those with impossibly arched backs, and painful-looking contortions you need not worry. The principle here is to be in a comfortable position conducive to concentration. This may be while sitting cross-legged, standing, lying down, and even walking.

If the position allows you to relax and focus, then that would be a good starting point. While sitting or standing, the back should be straight, but not tense or tight. In other positions, the only no-no is slouching and falling asleep.

Loose, comfortable clothes help a lot in the process since tight fitting clothes have a tendency to choke you up and make you feel tense.

The place you perform meditation should have a soothing atmosphere. It may be in your living room, or bedroom, or any place that you feel comfortable in. You might want an exercise mat if you plan to take on the more challenging positions (if you feel more focused doing so, and if the contortionist in you is screaming for release). You may want to have the place arranged so that it is soothing to your senses.

Silence helps most people relax and meditate, so you may want a quiet, isolated area far from the ringing of the phone or the humming of the washing machine. Pleasing scents also help in that regard, so stocking up on aromatic candles isn’t such a bad idea either.

The monks you see on television making those monotonous sounds are actually performing their mantra. This, in simple terms, is a short creed, a simple sound which, for these practitioners, holds a mystic value.

You do not need to perform such; however, it would pay to note that focusing on repeated actions such as breathing, and humming help the practitioner enter a higher state of consciousness.

The principle here is focus. You could also try focusing on a certain object or thought, or even, while keeping your eyes open, focus on a single sight.

One sample routine would be to while in a meditative state silently name every part of you body and focusing your consciousness on that part. While doing this you should be aware of any tension on any part of your body. Mentally visualize releasing this tension. It works wonders.

There are also many meditation CDs on the market that have been scientifically proven to alter your brainwaves in such a way to help you achieve deep meditation. find out more about these here: Meditation CDs.

In all, meditation is a relatively risk-free practice and its benefits are well worth the effort (or non-effort remember we’re relaxing).

Studies have shown that meditation does bring about beneficial physiologic effects to the body. And there has been a growing consensus in the medical community to further study the effects of such. So start now in creating your health and well being…start meditating today!

Who Am I - A Recursive Search For Inner Truth

November 14th, 2008

A couple of years ago when I was trying to find an answer one of life’s difficult questions, I came across a method of recursive questioning. This lit a light bulb in my head since I knew about the magic of recursion but it had never occurred to me to use it in the context of finding answer in my mind.

What is recursion? It’s a logical method that asks a question repeatedly until the answer breaks the repetitive cycle. Each time the question is asked, the context evolves and shifts and the question takes on a different meaning. It is quite a powerful method, partly because it is so simple.

Recently I bumped into a conversation where a new colleague challenges one of his peers with question: tell me who you are but don’t give me your name, job title, address, age, marital status etc. My poor colleague thought for a while before deciding that this was too hard.

Who am I if I can’t describe myself by the things that describe me? Who am I? I am not my name since I could change that and still be me. I am not my religion, profession and dress style for the same reasons. I am not my lifestyle, social status or age since they can all change whilst I remain me.

Am I my physical body? Let’s do a gruesome mind experiment to test this premise. What if I surgically removed a hand, will I still be me? Of course, I would be very unhappy but fundamentally I would still be me. I could loose other limbs and even some or all of my senses and I would still be me. So, I am not my body.

That’s amazing: I am not that what describes me and nor am I my body.

Am I my emotions? I can imagine a lifestyle that would make very happy and if anything, I would be more me than ever. Similarly it is easy to think of a lifestyle that would destroy my happiness. No doubt I would become a miserable introvert but unhappy as I would be, I would be me.

Am I my intelligence? How could I be? Intelligence is like height. We’re born with more or less of it but apart from being gifted, it doesn’t say much about us.

At least we can agree on one thing: I am alive, right? Who am I? I am alive. That sounds right. I remember my granddad very well. He died years ago but he was a great man. For me he still is a great man. He had his quirks but I liked him. Come to think of it, dead or alive, he is the same for me. I guess I will be me even when I’m gone. In fact I will always be me wherever I am.

Let me reiterate: I am not my identity, i.e. the things that describe me. I am not my body, emotions or intelligence. Basically, I am nothing. But I am also timeless or eternal and I am anywhere or everywhere. So, I am also all.

I am nothing and I am all. Who am I?

I am.

That simple answer is really profound. If we could really believe that, we’d view life very differently, completely detached for the simple reason that we are, anyway. The statement “I am” is without bounds and qualifying it any further would do us no justice, it would only limit us unnecessarily. By all means, we give our name and tell our friends what our likes and dislikes are but deep inside we must remember that we are much more than that. We are.

From this apparently simple premise, we can reconstruct a world that is comforting and rich. For example, if “I am” and “You are” then we can only conclude that “We are one”. That should profoundly change the way we see each other. We may as well cooperate and care for each other. The converse conclusion might be that if we compete and dislike each other, not only do we show how little we understand ourselves; it also does us a great services since we are effectively competing with and disliking ourselves.

Knowing the answer to the question “Who am I?” is only a start and only part of the answers we are looking for. But it is a great start and on the basis that we are one, “we” will look further. Until then.

Don’t Let Them Get You Down: When You’re On Your Way Up - What To Do About “The Discouragers”

November 12th, 2008

Have you ever noticed that when things in your life are starting to go well; starting to come together, along comes someone who wants to bring you down?

It could be a friend; it could be a close relative! It could be a total stranger. But those die-hard “losers,” the ones who want to wallow in their own misery - they get really bent out of shape when they see you happy and doing well.

Those sad and sorry types will try to bring you down to their level of gloom. Don’t let it happen.

Don’t bother getting angry. Don’t bother trying to educate them, either, because they aren’t ready to listen to you. They’ll have to figure that out on their own when they realize that the blame and gloom game does not get them anywhere good.

When things are going well for you, you just keep on smiling. Stay sweet, stay the course, and don’t let the whiners, the hostile, and the just plain nutcases get you down. Believe me, they will try their best.

In my faith, we call that the attack of the Enemy. And that’s exactly what it is. There are lots of people out there who would rather you did not succeed.

Yes, they’ll pooh-pooh your dreams; they’ll tell you it’s not going to work - whatever you’re trying, they’ve already done it, and it didn’t work.

Yeah, yeah. Just get away from those people and get back to your dreams muy pronto. You’ll be really glad you did. Next year at this time, your life will be that much richer, and theirs will still be the same if not worse. And don’t spend your energy trying to save their sinking ship, because you are not at the helm of that ship - they are.

Be joyous - it’s a beautiful world out there full of wonder. Yes, life is full of problems. And??

We can handle them and keep going. Frankly, that is 90 percent of life - that you just keep going. You don’t kill yourself. You don’t give up. You get through the worst of times. You just… keep going. We ALL have issues and we all have problems - but we can still be joyful and thankful for the good!

Our Skimpy Buckets

November 12th, 2008

“The woman said, `You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep’” (John 4:11).

We stand by the well of life with our pitifully small containers, knowing that the well is too deep for us to perceive. We lower and lower our broken cisterns into the world’s offerings of so-called wisdom. When we find the well is muddy and putrid, we look around for another who has a larger and more intact pitcher, and more knowledge of where to look for who possibly can help us. Again we are frustrated; our brothers and sisters are just as uncertain and unsteady as we are. Finally we lose faith and patience, for at last we realize that God has made foolish the wisdom of the world (1 Corinthians 1:20).

Then one day there stands beside us One who understands all things: our griefs, our sins, our hopes and our dashed hopes. There we are with our skimpy bucket ready to draw again from a well that will not quench our dryness, and yet we still question and cavil and we say to Jesus, “What do You have to draw with? I don’t see anything. I can’t have faith in You to quench this awful thirst for something better in my life, for I can’t see what You have.” How sad!

“Suppose there is a well of fathomless trouble inside your heart, and Jesus comes and says, `Let not your heart be troubled’; and you shrug your shoulders and say, `But, Lord, the well is deep; You cannot draw up quietness and comfort out of it’” (Oswald Chambers). Jesus must weep that we have such a difficult time believing that He has the means to dip into the well of life and to draw up for us His sustaining graces. And His water doesn’t just keep us alive; it makes us alive to all His blessings.

LCD vs. DLP TVs

November 11th, 2008

Two new technologies in the world of TV, DLP and LCD, are now in a tight competition. Not long ago, everyone was talking about Plasma and LCD - which one would win? It became clear to most that Plasma, with its short lifespan of just 3-4 years, was simply not the best choice. In fact, the LCD screen has several benefits over plasma. For instance, LCD screens run much cooler than the average plasma TV, and thus require less power to operate. Plasma TVs run so hot, in fact, that they require a fan to cool them down - which can be noisy. In addition, plasma screens have a tendency to degrade over time, slowly becoming dimmer. LCD screens, on the other hand, run relatively cool, and do not degrade over time. Some Plasma owners, who have used their TVs for a few years now, have already witnessed the dimming of their screens. Also, LCD screens tend to have overall better picture quality, and are typically 10 to 15 percent lighter than plasma.

Now the choice is mainly between LCD and DLP - two distinct technologies that offer slight differences in display, price, and performance. If you are looking to buy a new flatscreen TV this year, you are probably wondering which one is right for you.

What are DLP, LCD TV Screens?

DLP stands for Digital Light Processing, while LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. DLP technology, developed by Texas Instruments, uses a DMD, or Digital Micromirror Device, contructed of 1.3 million microscopic mirrors. Each of these mirrors is essentially a single pixel. When a digital signal enters the DLP system, each mirror is either activated or not, resulting in tapestry of mirrors tilting either towards the DLP light source or away. This process produces different levels of light and dark reflected by each individual mirror. The colors are produced when the DLP light sources run through a red, green, and blue color filter on a moving wheel. Depending on the lightness/ darkness of each mirror, the colors come in an enormous amount of shades, producing vivid color images.

LCD screens are made of several polarized glass panels, between which are liquid crystal molecules. An electric current is run through the crystal molecules, changing their position in respect to the glass. As light passes through the molecules, these changes in angle result in different lightness/ darkness patterns that produce images on the screen. There are usually three polarized glass panels, one with red pixels, blue, and green. This system also produced very accurate, vivid images, but angle is important. You may notice that the best colors in an LCD display are seen straight-on.

Is DLP, LCD TV Screens better than the other?

Simply put, that is a difficult question to answer. Unlike Plasma TV screens DLP and LCD last much are longer, and are considered to both have superior image quality. LCD screens tend to have slightly better contrast, with a larger range of black and white color shades. DLP, however, still has faster refresh rates than LCD (although LCD has been vastly improved in this area over the last two years). This can have implications if you are really into high-action motion (sports, action movies), because movement may seem a little blurred with LCD at times. Also, you’ll want to remember that in order for you to get the best color out of your LCD, you have to sit right in front of it. LCD TVs also have a slightly shorter lifespan than DLPs, with only 45,000 to 60,000 hours compared to 75,000 hours or more. As far as price goes, LCD and DLP are still more expensive than Plasma, but like all things in time, their price has been coming down. And right now, DLP is slightly more expensive than LCD, but not by much. DLP, in our eyes, is the best investment, at least for the next few years.
