Last Triumph in Cajamarca (A Poem)

February 28th, 2009

Weep for the one you slay today! The one you found at last.
Mourn for Atahualpa, for war has come and passed;
It was he who flamed the hearts so deep, with heroic

Breath, and now

Now Pizarro’s sword is laid and armor hangs in the house

Of Cajamarca….
Weep for the one so swift to slay, whom they shall hang

Todayin Cajamarca!

#1305 4/8/06 Note: Atahualpa, was king of the Incas, perhaps the most noted one in Inca history, or one of the most famous Incas at least. He was killed in Cajamarca, Peru, in the 16th Century, and of course there are many legends that surround his last days; those days in a Spanish Prison, in this Northern Peruvian city. I suppose, if the city is famous for anything, it is famous more for the death and incarceration of Atahualpa, than anything else. I am not here to judge history, or to say how bad the Spanish were, or how cruel the Incas were. And I’m sure we could point fingers at both of them for their atrocities, for the Inca Empire did not acquire its grand conquering status (likened to the Romans) by being less cruel than the Spanish, but it was Atahualpa, who was the headlines of the day, and all the gold the Inca world could gather, did not save him.

Dogs From Animal Shelters

February 27th, 2009

from David the Dogman

The ten worst excuses not to spay or neuter a pet are:

  1. Just one litter and then we’ll have Fluffy spayed.

(Studies show that virtually the entire pet overpopulation stems from the “just one litter mentality.)

  2. My dog doesn’t run loose, so he doesn’t need to be fixed.

    (Murphy’s Law says otherwise.)

  3. We always find homes for the kittens.

(And that means that an equal number of kittens at the pound will be killed.)

  4. I want the children to witness the miracle of birth.

    (Rent a video.)

  5. My dog is so cute and unique, there should be more of her.

(The shelters and pounds are full of cute and unique dogs, most with only a few days to live.)

  6. It’s not natural.

(There hasn’t been anything “natural” about dogs since we began to develop breeds thousands of years ago.)

  7. I just couldn’t look my dog in the eye if I had him castrated.

    (Watch it, you’re anthropomorphiizing.)

  8. A female dog or cat should have at least one litter for health reasons.

    (Medically, factually and ethicaly indefensible.)

  9. Neutering my dog will make him fat and lazy.

(Too much food and not enough exercise make a dog fat and lazy.)

  10. Fixing my pet will change its personality.

(The main influences on an animal’s personality are the kindness and care with which it is raised.)

Commitment, Firmness, but kindness.

Two Choices That can Make Next Year The Best Year of Your Life

February 26th, 2009

What if there were just two choices you could make to insure that next year would be wonderful? There actually are, and these choices are quite simple in concept, yet not easy to do. They are not things you do on the outside, such as exercising your body (which is always a good thing to do!) but ways of thinking and being on the inside. These have to do with your attitude and your intent.

GRATITUDE

I’m sure you’ve all heard of the “attitude of gratitude.” Studies show that the happiest and most successful people in the world are those who consistently live their lives with an attitude of gratitude, who see their cup as half full rather than half empty. Let’s take an example.

Alan and Martin are both firemen. They are both married with children, but this is where the similarities stop. Alan’s life seems to always be filled with joy and success, while Martin’s life always seems to be in turmoil. What is the difference?

Alan is a very upbeat person who always sees the good in everything and is always in gratitude for what he has. He is thankful for his work, his health, his family and his friends. When difficulties arise, he faces them head-on with an attitude of gratitude for the opportunity to learn and to help others. He believes he is spiritually guided and accepts challenges as opportunities for learning and serving. As a result of his openness and caring, people trust him and have come to him with opportunities to invest his money in ways that have created a passive income for his family. He continues to work because he likes it, not because he has to financially.

Martin, on the other hand, is a person who is constantly complaining about everything. Nothing is ever good enough for him. He blames others for his circumstances, takes no responsibility for his own feelings, and has no belief that he is being spiritually guided. He feels like a victim most of the time. As a result of the stress he causes himself due to his negative thinking, he is often ill, and experiences many family problems. He plods along in his work, resentful that he even has to work. He often feels like life is passing him by.

INTENT TO LEARN

God has given is the free will to choose our intention, to choose is what is most important to us in any given moment. In our relationship with ourselves and others, we have only two intentions to choose from:

1) The intent to learn, with our spiritual Guidance, about what is most loving to ourselves and others; 2) The intent to protect against the pain of rejection, abandonment, engulfment, or failure through some form of controlling behavior.

Our intent to learn or protect determines our experience in any given moment.

Hilary and Alice are both married with children. Both women work as nurses, but, as with Alan and Martin, this is where the similarity ends. Hilary and Alice have similar life challenges in both work and family, yet to look at Hilary you would think she doesn’t have a care in the world.

Hilary embraces all of life’s challenges from a solid knowing that she is on a spiritual journey of the soul - a journey of learning to be the most loving person she can be, both with herself and with others. She accepts responsibility for her own feelings and behavior, and opens to learning with Spirit and others when conflict occurs. Rather than shying away from conflict, she welcomes it as an opportunity for learning about herself and for healing any blocks to being a pure instrument of God’s work upon the planet. Hilary feels much peace and joy in her life.

Alice, on the other hand, is locked into the earthly journey of control. Instead of learning from conflicts, she avoids them with giving herself up or getting angry to have control over the outcome. Rather than taking responsibility for her own feelings, she often numbs out with food and wine. Control is her God. Alice is often anxious and depressed as a result of her intent to protect, and is on medication to deal with the resulting anxiety and depression.

It is not life’s circumstances that are causing Alan and Hilary to have so much more peace and joy than Alice and Martin. Choosing gratitude and the intent to learn, as opposed to complaining and the intent to protect makes all the difference in the world.

Make this coming year the best year of your life by making these two choices - gratitude and the intent to learn.

Meditation- The Secret To Prosperity

February 25th, 2009

Many years ago, when I set up my practice in hypnotherapy, I learnt quickly that people who attended me noticed positive changes in their financial condition. This was an observation that surprised me. Patients came to me with their emotional , psychological and physical problems. But what was changing was in addition to what they came for.

On realising the connection between meditation and prosperity, I decided to assure my patients about their financial health. I was hoping against hope that I would come across someone whose financial life will not change whereas everything else would. It did not happen that way. As they meditated, they became financially lucky. Most of them ended up getting promotions. Some got offers that were never expected-just out of the blue.

A retired businessman came to me many years ago. As usual I advised him to refrain from making any major life changes during treatment with me. He was considering investing more than a million dollars in an internet business. He reluctantly agreed. By the time the treatment ended, he had developed the practice of doing simple breathing exercises for a few minutes everyday. The dotcom industry had already crashed. The money that would have been lost, had he invested in the business venture, was saved.

Recently, a young woman came for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. She had been suffering with it for last seven years. By the time her treatment finished, she had developed the discipline of doing the breathing exercises regularly for 20 minutes daily. Not only her symptoms resolved, she was promoted in her job as well. The investment she had made in her treatment, gave her financial dividends that came unexpectedly.

Many years ago, a young struggling actor came to me for treatment of depression. I had told him that there could be pleasant surprises coming his way as the treatment progressed. Within a span of a few weeks of starting treatment he got an offer from Broadway. He was on the moon. He went away promising that he would continue treatment on coming back to Ireland. I have not heard of or seen him since.

A healthcare worker also complained of work stress as she was undergoing difficulties in relationships. She started to meditate and within months, she got her promotion. The same job that she found stressful, had become easy and she had started to enjoy it.

These are some of the real life experiences I have had with prosperity that I have seen in other people’s lives and also in my own. The most important thing about doing meditation is to do it as a discipline. Not only does it clear you up emotionally and physically, it brings calmness in the mind and the body as well. Prosperity is simply the icing on the cake. Even spending only five minutes a day will bring changes in your financial life. Do not expect it to happen, but it will.

Wooden Garden Sheds Need Not Be Too Pricey when You Purchase on the Net and Take Advantage of the Massive Choice

February 24th, 2009

There are lots of sound reasons why you might need a shed and as luck would have it there are sheds to match just about every last need. Sheds can be bought just about everywhere but what you will learn is the price will vary tremendously. You shouldn’t have to forego the garden shed you need because it is excessively high-priced though. A garden shed is something you buy once and use for years and if you have a look online you can discover Sheds at some pretty silly prices. I don’t mean cheap and silly as in quality but as in price. You’ll find you can acquire the garden shed you want for the cost of the one you were close to settle for very much cheaper and if you have a garden that you tend to every day you will almost likely need to look into wooden garden sheds as a space to place the tools, water hose and fertilizer etc..

Looking after your garden tools and having them easily accessible is a very good idea. You can find cheap reliable sheds on-line that are the same sheds you’d purchase in the store. In fact, you can even go to the garden store and shop even touch them to check if it is what you need then you can go online and purchase it for a lot lower price. The difference in price is sizeable!

Postmodern Self-assessment: Pretending Doesn’t Make It So

February 23rd, 2009

It was the fourth quarter in last Friday night’s football game between rival Texas high schools Keller and Richland, with Keller in possession on its own one-yard line. The Keller quarterback handed off to running back Lyndon LaPlante. LaPlante took off toward the goal line, slipping through a hole and avoiding tackles all along his 99-yard run to the goal line.

But LaPlante’s run didn’t count. Was there a penalty on the play? Had he stepped out of bounds? No. The whole thing was a set-up, probably inspired by “Radio,” the 2003 film starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Ed Harris, and Debra Winger. Kevin Atkinson, the Keller coach, had long been planning to give Lyndon, who has Down Syndrome, this moment of glory. He cleared it with Richland coach Gene Wier and with the game’s officials prior to the opening kickoff that it would happen on Keller’s first offensive play of the fourth quarter. Even the fans were in on the gesture, as they rose to their feet and cheered.

“Man, it was awesome,” LaPlante said. He was still holding the game ball when his mother woke him up on Saturday morning. “Everybody said, ‘Lyndon! Lyndon! Lyndon!’ I was crying with chills.”

We applaud this act of kindness; it was a wonderful expression of love and appreciation that Lyndon and his family will always remember fondly. Nevertheless, Lyndon’s touchdown didn’t change the score; on the next play, Keller was right back at its own one-yard line.

My postmodern friends tell me, “Perception forms reality.” But is it really true? Is reality totally subjective, or does reality exist objectively, whether or not we perceive it correctly? Teams, coaches, officials, and fans all agreed that despite Lyndon’s perception, an objective reality existed that said: “No score.”

We can apply this same principle again and again in our world. Children’s test scores should be meaningful measures of their knowledge and skills. They shouldn’t move on to the next grade unless they pass. Adults who are incompetent should not stay in jobs to fill a racial, ethnic, or disability quota. We should measure governmental programs or policies with objective standards. Those that aren’t working we should fix or end. Why? Because if we ignore objective reality, it will come back to bite us in painfully objective ways, like collapsing bridges or incompetent bureaucrats.

The same principle holds true in the moral universe. Someone argues, “A universal moral code doesn’t exist–everyone knows that. We can all agree that anyone who claims it does exist is a big liar.” Do you perceive the contradiction? Making such a claim doesn’t make it so.

Likewise you can look at your own life and say, “I am perfect in every way.” But even if you convince yourself, that doesn’t make you flawless. According to the Apostle John, if we should make such a claim, “We deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). What could be worse? Only someone who claims not only to be perfect now, but also blameless in the past. John says “If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word has no place in our lives” (verse 10). That is one function the Bible fulfills for us: it calls us back to objective reality. We are sinners in need of a Savior–and not just One Who can make us feel saved, but One who saves us in reality.

Abraham Lincoln once asked a stubborn disputant, “How many legs does a cow have?” “Why, four, of course!” was the reply. Lincoln leaned forward and looked the man in the eye, “Well then, how many would it have if we called its tail a leg?” With a sneer, the man answered, “Five!” “Nope!” said Lincoln. “It would still have four, because calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it so.”

The Pledge

February 23rd, 2009

You know kids, one of the things I’ve learned by letting more people know what’s going on inside my head is that once you do people expect you to live up to what you’ve put out there. I’ve sort of learned on the fly here that using this knowledge as a burr under the saddle that is my life accelerates my growth. Where I used to piddle (piddle’s a FUN word to say…) around on things that I was working on internally and hadn’t publicly disclosed, it’s become clear to me that if I make it wide spread knowledge that this is an area I’m working on getting better in, you guys and girls let me know when I’ve missed the mark.

Thus becoming yet another source of motivation. The basic philosophy here being you sharpen me, I sharpen you, we encourage, lift up and motivate each other.

With this in mind Id like to suggest a few things that we might all collectively work on . Hold still a minute would you. I need you to be my sharpening stone. In the new millennium and beyond here are just a few of the things you can look forward to from me. If youd like, you can join me in reaching for greater success in any or all of these areas.

Lets appreciate more of the things that tend to go unappreciated. The little things we take for granted. When was the last time you really stopped and considered the fact that there are people who have never seen and never will? When was the last time you were thankful for it? The gift of sight is no little thing. Is it?

Lets be an example of what it is to be Christ like. Which do you think is better? To say with your lips that you subscribe to and follow the teachings and example of someone you admire, or to actually do it with your actions.

Lets do more of the things that are worth doing, and less of the things that arent.

Lets listen more often and more actively. It has been said that small people monopolize the talking while big people monopolize the listening. Lets all be big people. As my grade school teachers constantly reminded me, its hard to learn while youre talking. And of course we all know this whole thing is an exercise is in learning.

Lets work during each day to be a better person at the end of the day than we were at the beginning. And while Im on the subject, if this is not the case with each of us then whats the point of going through the day?

Lets all raise our standards so that we expect the best for and from ourselves and those that have been placed under our influence.

Like I said these are just a few things it might be good to focus on doing better. The list could go on and on. I was just thinking this might be a good time for some real personal evaluation. A time to get refocused on doing this thing better.

I thank you in advance for your help in sharpening me.

Thanks for listening.

Live some. Love some. Learn some. Everyday.

Visiting San Antonio on a Budget

February 20th, 2009

San Antonio is one of the best cities to visit if you don’t have a lot of money to spend. From most cities in the United States you can find airline tickets there for around five hundred dollars, but cheap airline tickets aren’t the only reason San Antonio is a good vacation spot for people on a budget.

Hotels in San Antonio are relatively inexpensive compared to other cities in the United States and there’s plenty to do and see there. If you want to stay at Riverwalk, the city’s premier tourist attraction, you can find a four star hotel for under $150 per night. As an alternative, if you want to stay in the old part of the city near the Alamo, you can find a historic hotel for the same price and have an old world atmosphere.

Besides the Alamo, there are tons of things for your family to do and see in San Antonio. There are great restaurants, a lively art community, and such kid-friendly attractions like SeaWorld, Six Flags, and the San Antonio Zoo .

Dining out in San Antonio is great too because there are a ton of options whether you like down home style Mexican cooking, familiar national chains, southern barbecue or fine dining. You can find gourmet restaurants like the Fig Tree in historic buildings, chain restaurants like the Hard Rock Café, Hooters and Joe’s Crab Shack if you’re looking for a raucous good time, or small outdoor cafes under the trees where you can get authentic Mexican food or barbecued ribs Texas style.

Another great thing about San Antonio is that it’s within driving distance of Austin and Houston so you can make some city hops if you’re interested in seeing more of Texas. San Antonio will be a memorable vacation that fits well within your budget and chances are good that you’ll enjoy it so much you’ll want to come back again.
