I am 25 and have been married for two years. This past August I began an affair with my husband’s younger brother. I feel just terrible and want to end the relationship, but I feel I am in a hopeless situation.

The guilt is overwhelming, and I feel I need to come clean with my husband before I can get past what I’ve done and move on. However, I’m sure you can see the conflict. Since the affair involves someone so close to my husband, I don’t know that we could ever get through this.

I don’t want to destroy the relationship between my husband and his brother, not to mention that this news would destroy their entire family. I feel like I should divorce my husband, cut off all contact with him and his brother, and live with the consequences of my actions–loneliness, guilt, and the burden of my sins. Can you please help?

Kerri, you want to whip yourself with a cat-o’-nine-tails, but this is not something to whip yourself about. It is something to understand. There is no point in becoming just another miserable person on the planet. Too many people already fit that category.

Your affair is not the problem. The problem started before that, and it involves what you brought to the marriage. When two people have that ultimate love which everyone craves, they never forget who they are married to. Forgetting the other person would be like forgetting their own name.

If you truly loved your husband, you couldn’t have done this. If you hadn’t done something so severe, he would want to work out your differences. Your reasons for marrying this man were not sufficient to sustain the marriage. So you sought a way out.

If you decide to divorce, you owe your husband an explanation. You may want to tell him you deceived yourself about your feelings for him. If he did nothing wrong, you need to tell him that.

It is up to you whether or not you admit sleeping with his brother. The question is, Does he need his brother more than he needs to know what his brother is like?

Perhaps you don’t feel worthy of love. If that is the case, you need to explore this issue as well. The marriage you want is the opposite of what you did. Like every other human being you deserve love, not loneliness, guilt and anxiety. But until you understand why you acted, there is no way to end the cycle of doing wrong, then punishing yourself after the fact.

Silence Accepts

I have been dating Nick for over three years now. He is wonderful. One problem though. His family often makes very racist comments. Not just jokes, but mean-spirited comments. I have friends of many backgrounds, and I am deeply offended when I hear these things.

Nick does not have any racist feelings, so he is not part of the problem. At the same time, he never confronts his family about their hurtful comments. By letting his family know how I feel, I risk angering them and having them take it out on Nick, and I’d rather not do that. Should I say something?

Brooke, some years ago I read a remark by the science writer Guy Murchie. He said that no one we see, no matter where they come from, can be less than about a fiftieth cousin to us.

Beyond that, nearly every spiritual tradition condemns this sort of prejudice. When Tamara and I run into this situation, we either speak up, or we get up and leave. People deserve to be judged on their individual merits, and remaining silent, denies our common humanity.

You and Nick are serious. You cannot allow this to continue. His family needs to understand that these remarks are unacceptable in your presence.

Problems are also the first step in a new invention.

Problems also cause you to become active in helping others. The organization

founder didn’t lose her daughter in a car accident caused by a drunk driver.

That one death has literally changed all the drunk driving laws throughout
the United States and saved MILLIONS of lives!

Without problems, we couldn’t solve a lot of future turmoils and save people
a lot of money in business.

Any company that introduces a new product will hire people to try it out before it is introduced to the market.

These people report the problems they find and the company refines it until it’s right.

Without problems developing early in these tests, the company could never
improve and fine tune their product to perfection.

Problems and mistakes are also a blessing in disguise. For instance,
Post-It(R) Notes would never have been made possible unless the guy at

the factory didn’t mess up mixing the glue recipe.

Sure, this is an isolated incident, but it shows just how important mistakes and problems can be.

However, most people have some perceived notion that making a mistake or
having a problem is “bad.”

Instead of looking for ways to SOLVE the problem, they try to live with it, cover it up or condition themselves to accept it.

This is silly! There is no problem that can’t be solved. There is a solution
to every single problem you can think of.

The solution may not always be what you want it to be but it’s a solution just the same.

And covering it up is like putting a piece of foil over a piece of spoiled
meat and expecting it not to draw maggots.

You have to dispose of the entire thing before you are finally rid of the problem.

Attack the core of the problem! Dig until you uncover it! Face facts! Admit you have problems!

Stop trying to make people think you are problem-free. It’s unnatural!

When you solve a problem that most people try to avoid or can’t solve, you get recognition and their admiration.

You may become a hero or heroine.

So, next time you have a problem, look at it logically and with enthusiasm.

That may sound a little strange but most problems can be dealt with this way.

Love the fact that you have problems because they will give you something to work on and solve.

They also will give you a way to invent new ways of doing something, new ways that will save you time and make you happier with your life.

And when you solve problems, you not only gain experience in solving other problems as they occur, but you build respect for yourself.

Then you can have the admiration of all those people who encountered the same problems but didn’t do anything to solve them.

You also will find that when you look at problems with a POSITIVE mind, you
will accomplish more, relieve stress and succeed.

At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn” (Matthew 13:30 ).

“The bundle of the living is the precious package of those for whom the Lord cares” (Oxford Annotated Bible). We slip out of the bundle when we insist on going our own way. Our self-assertion pokes a needle through the seal of love God has so carefully wrapped around us; finally and slowly, out seeps the preserving fluid of God’s Living Water. We can’t understand why we are in a dry land of self and left to face the world alone.

Life is bound in bundles, starting with our family. There is no island, physical or spiritual or mental, where we can isolate our “self,” much as we wish it at times. God has declared that we shall not live alone (Genesis 2:18). Our growth depends on and is proved by our ability to bundle with–to get along with–others. Every person who touches our day becomes bound with us and we with them. It’s a grand concept that should help us to interact with loving concern for all.

We are bound in bundles with all who have come before us, too, for we share in their genes and their ideas. Every time we read a great book, we are bound with the author. We are bound to the past and bound to respect the past, as well. If not, we are indeed doomed to repeat the mistakes that have caused weeds of war and wrong to proliferate through this poor, sad world.

O Father, help us to remember that we are your precious possession, wrapped in Your bundle that we may not be lost!

When was the last time you caught a snowflake on your tongue or let snowflakes coat your eyelashes? Sound like fun?

It is!

Last weekend I was up at my favorite coffee house when it began to snow and snow hard. It was an amazing and welcomed event…until last weekend we had not seen any sign of moisture for 143 days and where I live in Arizona, snow is rare.

Not only was the snow a beautiful sight to see, but what was even more beautiful was watching 30 adults (myself included) darting in and out of the snow…catching snowflakes on our tongues and on our eyelashes, giggling and laughing like little children. The result was energizing and uplifting!!

It was then that I was reminded of how important it is to stay in touch with our child sides. (You know the part of each if us that loves to do silly things and enjoys being playful.) We all have the capability to be child-like and it is more than OK to embrace that side of yourself, letting it come out and play. Heck, it is what keeps us young and helps us to recharge our batteries.

So, can you come out and play?

I challenge you to…

have a snowball fight or make a snow angel (if you have snow)…
turn some cartwheels…
sit on the floor and play jacks…
skip down the sidewalk…
jump rope…
sing and dance in the middle of your living room…
spin in circles until you get dizzy

Whatever you choose to do, have fun, re-energize, because you deserve it!! Oh, and one more thing, try and make a play date with yourself on a regular basis. I promise you, you will be glad you did.

In my years teaching people to be successful, I have seen that basically people break their lives down in to two major parts: Wealth-building and the rest of their lives. Having done a lot of reflection on these two topics - wealth and life - I am coming to some new conclusions about how to perceive the two.

Until recently I thought that there was a significant difference in how we should tackle the two areas. In fact, I thought that the two topics should be addressed in almost opposite fashion.

You see, wealth-building is just math. While life — Life is art.

Think back with me to high school. Most of us were required to take math and most of us probably took art as well.

Now, think about your final exams in the two areas. Your math paper was graded on hard facts:

Ten times ten is always one-hundred
Thirty divided by three is always ten
Seven plus seven is always fourteen
Fifty minus twenty-five is always twenty-five

There is always just one answer in math. The answers are hard fact, set in stone. Math is a science. It is formulaic. You can know the outcome before it happens, every time.

But what about your final art project? Art is much more subjective. “Beauty,” they say, “is in the eye of the beholder.” There is no one right answer.

Think of the different styles of the famous artists:

Renoir
Monet
Picasso
Rockwell
Warhol

Different people find different styles beautiful, and that is what makes art, art.

So how does this fit with Wealth-building and life? Wealth-building is like math:

If you add $1000 to your retirement account each month and gain seven percent interest over twenty years, you can know now how much you will have then. It is math. If you buy a rental property for $200,000 now and it increases in value by three percent a year, you know exactly how much you will be able to sell it for in ten years. The beauty of math is in the knowing. You can work the system, set it on auto-pilot and the math does the work for you, and you know the outcome.

But life? Life is art. And that is the beauty of life. You do not know how it is going to turn out. Life, like art, is always changing. Different people provide different colors. When you make a mistake you can go back, erase it or even paint right over it. You can change the scenery. Life, like art, is ever evolving, and what looks good to one person is of no interest to another. And that is what makes life beautiful.

Another lesson I think we can draw is that in life we should do our math, of course, but life isn’t made up of just wealth-building. Wealth-building should serve our ability to live our lives. Jesus, the master teacher, said that our lives are not made up of the abundance of our possessions. He didn’t mean that possessions aren’t good, just that wealth isn’t what life is all about.

So let me ask you: Are you spending more time on your math or your art? Do your math. Everybody should do their very best at their wealth-building plan so they can take care of themselves and their families.

But life is about the art. What does your canvas look like? What kind of picture are you painting? What kind of pot are you creating? What kind of statue are you sculpting? Take your time, make bold strokes, use brilliant colors, and make of your life the most beautiful masterpiece that you can.

In other words, do your math so you can focus on your art.
