Rookie Graphic Designers, Listen up!

April 22nd, 2009

I was roaming on YouTube the other day, when I typed in “graphic design” to search the videos. I found only one relevant one. I couldn’t help but wondering that there are many graphic and web designers in the community and a few heads-up for them may be very helpful. I’m not giving these advices in the position of an expert because I have only been self-studying for a couple of years. However, the internet has offered me the opportunity to learn much more than I could learn in classrooms.

Please note that the following four tips are of equal importance.

  1. DeviantART account.

A deviantART account is essential for anyone who wants to have a go in graphic and web design. People share wicked thoughts about designing on it. Useful tips and tricks can also be found. The account can offer you a place to show people your works as well. Some MySpace Layouts are inspired from deviantART

  2. Think ’small’ at first.

In your early stage, there’s no way that you could get any major assignments from huge international companies. Starting from the local community will be much easier. Once your works have been appreciated by others, news spreads quickly.

  3. Fonts: what to use and what not to.

Helvetica, a font which is probably known by most people in the business can still be found on Mac for free. While if you are operating under Windows systems, you’ll have to purchase or download this font. What’s really cool about Helvetica is that it can literally make anything look beautiful. Your job is to find the right thickness and spacing for the word, Helvetica will make it look professional. In fact, our life is surrounded by Helvetica whether you have noticed or not. Shop banners, local newspaper, ads boards, they are everywhere.

On the exact opposite of the scale is a font called Comic Sans, its notoriety even cause someone to build a whole website to ban its use. So delete it off your computer with no hesitation.

  4. Make good use of free stuff.

The wondrous invention of the internet has offered us the access to ever growing free resources. Finding the right ones means you could greatly reduce the time you spend on your tasks. Resources are created to be utilized, so why not make full use of them. DeviantART is just one example of useful resources. If you are looking for free tutorials about web and graphic designing, YouTube is definitely the place to go.

These tips only represent my personal opinions and I hope they’re helpful to our fellow graphic design geeks.

This glass front is hinged at the top allowing someone to easily admittance books and other collectibles plainly by lifting the glass door. A barrister bookcase is ideal for a thousand things. Barrister bookcases were frequently used by attorneys since it was necessary for them to keep on moving. Today, they are also very useful, specially if one is constantly on the move. This is because the bookcase is closed by use of doors.. This enables ledgers and collectibles to be moved while still inside the bookcase while still retaining them.

Oak Furniture
Barrister bookcases have the advantage of preservativing the collectibles from dust and other foreign impurities. They offer broader protection than other types of bookshelves. Apart from debris, it is also possible to provide protection from sun by adding tempered glass. . This will help in minimizing the amount and intensity of sunshine impacting the books This in turn maintains the books colour from fading

This special kind of book shelves, despite many benifits, often are quite pricey. Fortuitously, there unqiueness has caused some makers to start making replica editions. Some stylish versions are also available at very healthy prices. Some variations have simple appearances and can be made to fit a particular theme. They can also be trimmed. They can be stacked allowing them to be easily used to create very interesting unit placements. Some can be used to create end tables, kitchen tables or even dinning tables.

How To Prevent Your Horse Going Lame From The Most Common Ca

April 19th, 2009

There are lots of ways a horse can go lame. Perhaps the most common cause of lameness is a result of Navicular Syndrome. The fortunate thing is that it can be treated where the horse gets complete, successful recovery if diagnosed and treated in it’s early stages. Here’s what you need to know about Navicular Syndrome.

First, there is a small bone between the coffin bone and the short pastern bone called the navicular bone. This bone is important in that it distributes the horse’s weight between the coffin bone and the short pastern bone. The result is that it reduces the stress on both the coffin bone and short pastern bone when the foot lands to the ground and weight is put on it. (Even though the rear feet have navicular bones, it is the fore feet that are most often affected)

The navicular bone also works with a tendon called the “deep digital flexor tendon.” This tendon flexes the coffin and pastern joints. It also absorbs shock when the hoof strikes the ground. When the flexor tendon moves, it slides over the cartlidge-covered navicluar bone which lowers the work load of the tendon when the foot moves.

Thus, when the horse’s foot lands to the ground there is a lot of force on the navicular bone. As the horse’s weight is transferred over the foot, the bone is pushed against the tendon. When this happens repeatedly, then damage to the navicular bone and the tendon can occur.

One thing that can happen is the cartlidge can lose its slippery surface and friction can develop between the navicular bone and the tendon. Then the tendon can become rough and make the sliding motion on the navicluar bone even worse. This ultimately leads to pain for the horse and worse, lameness. Worse, the blood flow to the navicular bone and the tendon could be decreased and it may not heal.

How can you tell if your horse may have navicular syndrome? One is he may not want to change leads. He may lose his suppleness or perhaps have a stiff and jerky gait. As this gets worse the may show lameness where you may see short stride in one or both front legs. The horse will purposely try to step on his toe portion of the foot because the pain will be in the back of the foot. Thus, you will see his toe is worn more than any other part of the foot.

This condition will more easily show up in hard-working horses. It also is more apparent when a horse works in tight circles. When he is moving in a straight line it is not as apparent. The lameness seems to almost disappear when the horse is at rest. It will reappear when it is working hard again.

How do you treat navicular syndrome? First, begin early. The horse owner is responsible for recognizing there may be a problem. If there is a problem, then the veterinarian and the farrier should be called so treatment can begin. The treatment consists of corrective trimming and shoeing, pain relieving and inflammation decreasing drugs, and carefully controlled exercise.

Interestingly, treatment for navicular syndrome may be quite different from veterinarian to the next. They will not necessarily prescribe the same treatment.

Exercise is one of the most important parts of the treatment because it increases blood flow to the horse’s foot. But remember that the exercise has to be carefully done.

What horses are the most likely to have navicular syndrome? Hard working horses like race horses, cutting, reining, calf roping, and barrel racers. They are especially more likely to get navicular syndrome if they work on hard surfaces and have poor conformation.

Navicular syndrome is most common in horses with upright pasterns. Navicluar syndrome is also common in horses when the hoof and pastern slope at different angles.

As a horse owner, you should know that improper trimming and shoeing can also cause navicular syndrome. If the farrier trims a heel too low on a horse with an upright pastern it can increase the pressure where the flexor tendon and the navicular bone meet.

Thus, be watchful of your horse. If you see something out of the ordinary when you ask your horse to work hard you may begin by looking for navicular syndrome since it is the most common cause of lameness in horses. As always, consult your veterinarian for diagnoses and treatments.

Inspiration: Content Motivates

April 19th, 2009

You won’t believe what my son said yesterday! It was so funny. I was sitting at the computer typing away on my latest project and he walked up behind me and looped his arms around my neck (just like he does almost every morning) and said, “Mom, what cha writing?”

I calmly responded, “Content for my site.” And leaned back for his warm hug. I love it when he does that.

“So, who did you write about this time?” His voice sounded almost excited, as if he really wanted to know.

I typed in another paragraph with him reading over my shoulder including his name in the conversational dialogue. “Mom, you’re writing about me again.” I got another hug and he was off to work on his next book. Kenton has been writing an average of one children’s book every three or four months, including illustrations since he first figured out he could be a published author and make money from his writing, almost a year ago.

How often are we inspired by seeing our name in print? It’s awesome! What more could a writer want than to be quoted?

Not very long ago, I saw an article that said, “According to Jan Verhoeff… and a bit later in the article, referred to Jan (me) as HE.” It didn’t matter. I’m sure the author of the article hadn’t done any research on me as a writer, just on what I’d written about. The quote was right out of one of my more prominent Internet documents, and well stated, fitting extremely well with the topic of the article where I was quoted. For those of you who have seen my picture, I’m definitely not a HE, and for those of you who haven’t, but do read many of my gender specific posts, you already know I’m a woman.

I ran around for two weeks telling everyone within shouting distance that I’d been quoted! I think I even posted it on a favorite writer site, to hear all the congratulations and encouragement. It made me feel special to be written about.

New Posters and Leaflets Published by HSE

April 15th, 2009

A recent research showed that the poster and leaflet approved by the HSE in 1999 are rarely read and are unappealing to employees. To tackle the problem, new posters have been approved and published by the HSE. According to the agency, these posters are not only modern but are also eye catching and easy to read. The posters cover basic precautions and emergency steps to be followed by employers and workers.

Under the Health and Safety Information for Employees Regulations (HSIER), it is compulsory for the employers to either display these posters at the workplace or provide leaflets conveying the same information to the workers. The rules laid down in the posters and leaflets are described by the British health and safety laws. The new Leaflets are expected to be more effective as they are printed as pocket size cards, which are easy to carry. The older posters and the leaflets will not be available anymore with the release of the new version.

The new posters and pocket cards are expected to reduce the administrative costs for employers since these contain updated versions of the health and safety procedures, relieving the employers of their responsibility to update the older posters.

HSE has however allowed the employers to use their old versions of posters, provided the information is readable and contains the latest contact information of the enforcing authority and the Employment Medical Advisory Service. This provision is applicable only until 2014. Updated addresses are available on HSE’s Infoline - 0845 345 0055.

How to Remove Your Mk2 Mini Moto Engine

April 14th, 2009

Many mini moto modifications will require you to remove the engine from the mini moto. This is why I have produced the following guide.

Firstly you will need to remove the mini moto’s fairing.

Start with the seat fairing, unscrew the four seat screws and remove the seat. Unscrew the screw at the front end of the seat fairing and remove the petrol cap. The fairing can now be lifted from the mini moto. Replace the fuel tank petrol cap and remove the fuel tank by pulling the rubber tube of the nipple on the top of the carburettor. You may want to double the rubber fuel tube over and secure it in this position with a clothes peg. This is to stop fuel leaking out.

Remove the bottom fairing by unscrewing the holding bolts (two on each side), this frees the bottom fairing from the top. Unscrew the two bolts on the underside of the bottom fairing. The bottom fairing is now free. The top fairing is only now held on by one last bolt located in between the handle bars at the front of the mini moto.

Once you have removed the fairing, you will need to take the chain off the front sprocket. To do this loosen the back wheel nuts and the tensioning bolts. The back wheel can now be manoeuvred toward the front sprocket loosing the chain. When the chain is loose enough you can remove it from the front sprocket.

Remove the pull start from the engine by unscrewing the three holding screws. Once the pull start has been removed you will see the wire that comes from the stop switch. Unplug this.

The throttle cable can be removed from its fitting on the top of the carburettor. Pull the rubber seal up so that the locking nut can be unscrewed, the throttle can now be pulled from the carburettor along with the needle valve and spring.

The next step is to Remove the Exhaust. The exhaust is fixed to the mini motos frame by a bolt located just under the seat fairing toward the back of your mini moto. Undo this bolt with a spanner and an alan key. The exhaust is fixed to the underside of the engine by two bolts via a gasket. Remove the two bolts with an alan key making sure that you do not lose the gasket washer. The exhaust can now be slid out past the engine and removed form the mini moto.

The engine is free from its mechanical fittings, the engine then needs to be removed from the mini motos frame. The bolt at the top of the engine must be undone first using the alan key. The three screws located on the underside of the engine are the last fixings to be undone. The engine can now be completely removed from the mini moto.

“How to Ensure that Your Cat is Healthy and Lives a Long and

April 14th, 2009

Incredible advances in veterinary medicine are making it possible for cats to live longer, healthier lives than ever before. The quality of your cat’s health is the result of a partnership between you and your veterinarian. You must be confident that the vet you have chosen will take good care of your cats.

When you first get your cat, be sure to have your veterinarian examine her within 10 days. In addition to getting baseline weights and measurements on her, your vet will want to check her blood and stools for illness and parasites. If you have never had a cat before, the first visit is a good time to get a demonstration in cleaning your pet’s ears and clipping her toenails properly.

A proper diet and sufficient exercise are key factors in keeping your cat healthy. You must make sure the food you give your cat is of good quality to provide her with the correct amounts of nutrients to keep her systems running. If you are confused by the variety of brands of cat food available, ask your veterinarian for some help. Don’t be embarrassed to tell him how much you are able/willing to spend for pet food. There are some excellent brands that are not very expensive, and some expensive brands that are not very good.

Exercise not only keeps your cat’s weight under control, it strengthens her muscles and enhances her immune system. Some cats are naturally active. Others need anywhere from a little to a lot of encouragement from you to get moving. Set aside some dedicated playtime each day with your cat, and she’ll be more inclined to get physical.

Yearly “well-cat” appointments with your veterinarian help track your cat’s health. A thorough going-over under the vet’s expert eye can catch early skin or eye conditions and other physical changes that you might not notice on a day-to-day basis. Blood and stool samples allows your vet to diagnose and treat disease and parasites before they reach a critical state.

The yearly vet visit is also a good time to mention any “strange habits” your cat may have developed over the last year. Often, these have simple explanations, but some behaviors, such as licking paint or eating strange substances can indicate a medical condition.

One of the most important aspects of the yearly vet visit is updating your cat’s vaccinations. Even if you keep your cat strictly indoors, it is important to have her vaccinated against diseases such as rabies, panleukopenia, calcivirus, Chlamydia and feline leukemia virus. If your cat were to get out of the house and wander, she has protection against some of the diseases that cost less fortunate cats their lives.

How Do You Find a Veterinarian?

* Get recommendations from other cat owners in your area.
* Ask cat groomers or emergency clinics for recommendations.
* Neighbors or your local pet supply store may be able to make suggestions.
* If you’ve just moved to the area, ask your former veterinarian if he/she could recommend a veterinarian in your new hometown

The process for selecting a veterinarian is very much like choosing your own personal physician. You want to find a doctor that you feel comfortable talking with, someone who encourages all of your questions and supports you in all the health care choices you make on your cat’s behalf.

How to Crate Train Your Puppy

April 14th, 2009

One of the most difficult hurdles that any new puppy owner faces is housebreaking or as it is sometimes also referred to; potty training or doing business. Although there is no tactic that comes with a 100% guarantee, one of the most successful methods is crate training. Crate training can drastically reduce the amount of stress on the owner and the puppy that often comes with training the new four-legged member of your family.
So what is a crate? It is a cage that is usually made of plastic or wire. Wire ones are collapsible and the puppy has a great view of his surroundings. The plastic crates are lightweight and easy to clean and tend to be the most commonly used. Either can be purchased at a department or pet store. When purchasing a crate you must make sure there is enough room for the puppy to stretch right out and to stand erect. Make sure the crate is not too big though or all your potty training efforts in vain because the puppy will be able to do her business in one end and sleep in the other.
Crates can also be used for a variety of other things than just potty training. It provides the “den” security that can be traced back to their ancestors. It provides a place that is safe and cozy for the puppy. Putting the puppy in the crate when there is company or a lot of activity going on it saves her from all the reprimands from getting in the way. It is great for travelling. When you have to leave the puppy home putting her in her crate will save you from coming home to a disaster. It is also great for your puppy to sleep in through the night without the owner having to worry about her roaming around and possibly injuring herself. Puppies however, should NEVER be left alone in their crate for extended periods of time.
What makes the crate method of potty training so effective is because a puppy will not soil where it sleeps. However if you leave the puppy in the crate for too long it will have to do business and you will set your potty training efforts back to the beginning. The most important things you need to remember about crate training are consistency and routine and lots and lots of rewards. A crate is used differently to potty train then if you have to go out and you are leaving her home alone. When you are leaving your puppy home you have to put the crate in a small area, for example a bathroom and leave the crate door open with newspapers down for the puppy to do her business. Once the puppy is older and has good bladder and bowel control you can leave it in the crate but preferably not longer than 4 hours. However for potty training your puppy should stay in the crate then taken out frequently to the area that she is suppose to do her business. This can be either outside or on newspapers. For a very new puppy take her out to do her business every half-hour then after 8 weeks every hour. When the puppy goes potty where she is suppose to you can reward her with treats and lots of praise and maybe leave her out to play for awhile before putting her back in. If she does not go within around 10 minutes just put her back in her crate and try again later. If you keep a record of when your puppy goes, for instance how long after she eats or naps then you will know when to let her out and she can have more and more time left out to play. The crate will also help puppies learn bladder and bowel control. A great idea is to either say something like “go potty” or “do your business” when you put her outside or on newspaper then when she hears those words she’ll know it is time to go out. Also if you have something for her to scratch or ring or push she will learn as she gets older that that is what she needs to do to let you know that she needs to go out. Puppies want very much to please you so training them, as puppies will make things much easier for you and her as she gets older.
Of course when the puppy is initially introduced into the crate there will be lots of whining. This is not the sort of behavior you want to encourage or reward with attention. When she quiets down then you can take her out for a little playtime but the whining should be ignored. The crate should be kept in an area where she will not be alone and can be part of the family then at night take her into the bedroom with you. Be sure to have a soft blanket and a snuggle toy in the crate with her. I often put a blanket over the crate to give the puppy a very secure feeling. In the beginning you will have to get up a few times during the night to let her out but take a deep breath (or a nap) because this really will not last forever. I have seen puppies sleep through the night at 8 weeks.
Successful crate training requires commitment on the part of you the owner and it definitely is work. However, the reward in the end will make it more than worth the effort.
