How Ken Mehlman of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. Works in Co-Ordination with the Environmental Defense Fund

December 22nd, 2009

Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) was established by Henry Kravis and his business partner George Roberts in the mid 70’s with the help of the First Chicago Corporation. But they have set up a groundbreaking green proposal which concentrates not simply on how profitable a corporate entity is, but also on how environmentally aware each of their companies are. Environmentally aware business practice became more widely recognized in 2008 when Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co’s Henry Kravis and the non-profit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) merged. Issues like soil contamination and disproportionate water consumption feature high on their list of goals. In order to implement these goals, they utilize eco-efficiency, this calls for practical techniques like fuel economy, using clean energy, and reducing the intensity of materials. Even though the project was an enormous success, staff simply did not recognize how extensive the consequences really were until Ken Mehlman, the head of the project and global public affairs, finished the review of the first year. Much to everyone’s surprise, Ken realized that the project not only raised environmental responsibility, but also increased the the profit from every company too. These days, KKR and Ken Mehlman have succeeded in getting nearly every associated business actively participating in eco-efficiency. And, when you consider that the group has a current business portfolio with a value of 86,000,000,000 USD, you can be sure this was no easy accomplishment. The initial project has now broadened to include new ventures. The Climate Corps Program administered by the EDF is just one of these, it heightens awareness of eco-efficient techniques to MBA interns.

KKR and Ken Mehlman have made the effort to formulate analytic tools and other applicable products that can administer resources. Programs like these can measure a company’s environmental impact and identify any underlying problems. Henry Kravis, the KKC, and the Environmental Defense Fund have encouraged all sorts of businesses to go green. Their unique ideas have made decreasing their ecological impact less problematic for business organizations in any sector and proved that running a profitable business need not entail the hefty price of negatively impacting our planet.
