Mental Health Problems on a Rise in UK Workforce

According to a new report the mental health illness is on a rise among the UK workers. The report prepared by charity, Elizabeth Finn Care, and Roehampton University claims that the increase is directly attributable to the recession.

The study discovered that around 47% of the workforce had experienced symptoms of depression as a result of recession. The number is more than four times higher than the levels observed for majority of population before the recession.

A majority of people, who lost their jobs on account of recession, have been found to be suffering from varied degrees of depression. The report also suggests that people in lower SES groups and the higher SES groups suffer less depression on the same ground, 44.9% and 46.7% respectively than the middle Social Economic Status (SES) groups (59.85).

Further 51% of people who had experienced cuts in salary or work hours and days said they had experienced some degree of depression, while 45% said the same for stress symptoms and 48% for anxiety.

The depression levels were maximum for young employees in the age group of 16 to 30 years as 45% of them were found suffering from stress and 43% suffering from anxiety.

Researchers recently presented a new study on the same at the British Psychological Society’s Division of Occupational Psychology Annual Conference. The report was co-funded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and Investors in People.

The research aimed to analyse various aspects of the manager-employee relationship, which has often been known to lead to workplace stress. Researchers asked 150 managers to rate their own management expertise, while 500 workers were also asked to rate the management skills of their managers.

The study saw managers being divided into two groups - one group was given training and/or feedback on their management skills and the other was not given any feedback. The training and feedback concentrated on management behaviours, which are believed to be important for the prevention and reduction of staffs’ stress.

According to the study, effective managers had integrity and the ability to control their emotions, could manage and communicate existing and future work, were good at empathetic management of individuals within the team and could effectively manage conflict.

It was also discovered that managers who did get any feedback had lesser chances of changing their management style. Thus, feedback was found to be essential to kick off change.
