What Is One to Do? They Call Me Michael and I Am Everywhere

January 3rd, 2011

Have you sometimes thought you have a very popular name? What do you believe you might do if you met someone who has your name? By way of the Interwebs it is now quite easy to make yourself known to people who have names your family gave you. Maybe they go by a different middle name. Maybe she spells your shared name a little differently from you. All sorts of people discover some doppelnamers who share our names. Once in a great while our counterparts may even join professions we pursue.

In baseball’s minor leagues there is a player known as Michael Martinez. On the other hand there is also a pre-collegiate baseball enthusiast called Michael Martinez. Also one hears about a famous racehorse jockey known as Michael Martinez. Basketball also has a player billed as Michael Martinez. The next time you talk about sports with a friend who likes Michael Martinez, you want to be clear that both of you are speaking about the right Michael Martinez!

Quite a few educators may encounter more than one instructor named Michael Martinez. There are a couple of professors of poly sci published as Michael Martinez. Journalism is one more career path known for having at least two members named Michael Martinez. Picture someone named Michael Martinez interviewing someone else named Michael Martinez. Is that confusing enough?

If you think this all unlikely, remember that “Michael” ranks among the most popular names bestowed upon boys in the USA. Altnerate forms of “Michael” from other languages around the world such as Spanish (Miguel), Russian (Mikail), among others, bring in even more Michaels. Among many families the name “Martinez” may be one of the most popular. Some experts estimate 20,000,000 individuals in South and North America carry the family name “Martinez”. Hence the chances that a family would christen a son “Michael Martinez” seem generally sound.

There are other common name combinations similar to “David Jones”, “Jim Smith”, “Tom Smith”, and “Jeff Bates”. Maybe it’s likely popular surnames include “Black”, “Foster”, “White”, and “O’Neill” or “O’Neal”. Oft-used first names include Michael, Jack, John, David, William, Bill, and Bob.

Expecting parents don’t need to be too disappointed. Almost all of us may have doppelnamers and some of us may eventually come across a few doppelnamers. But remember it is not simply the name we are given that defines what we are. One’s choices and friends and relatives also make up thread in the tapestry of a person’s life. We establish who we are by the things we strive for and those we are with. Therefore don’t fret about who else may also have a name similar to your own. Instead, look at these doppelnamers as old friends whose lives could have been your ownbut for a ripple in the universe.
